Born Natalie Mering, the Santa Monica, California-born singer, songwriter, and musician is better known by her stage name Weyes Blood. Born into a family of musicians – her father was the leader of Sumner, who released a self-titled album on Elektra Records in 1980 – the young Natalie moved several times with her family before settling in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. She began writing songs while in high school, penning them under the name Wise Blood. After high school, she moved to Portland, Oregon to attend college, but dropped out after a year and became involved in the underground music scene. After playing in bands such as Jackie-O Motherfucker and Sanitized, she set out on her own and pursued a solo career.
In 2011, she released the album THE OUTSIDE ROOM under the name Weyes Blood and the Dark Juices. The album achieved critical acclaim and was followed three years later by the album THE INNOCENTS. While she was already a critical darling, she didn’t come into prominence until the release of her third album, FRONT ROW SEAT TO EARTH, in 2016. The album reached #23 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and introduced her to a wider audience. Signing to the Sub Pop label, her next album, TITANIC RISING (2019), was an international success, climbing high in the charts in the US, Scotland, and the UK. TITANIC RISING even reached the top of Billboard’s Americana Albums chart.
Weyes Blood returns in 2022 with her highly anticipated fifth album, AND IN THE DARKNESS, HEARTS AGLOW. For anyone unfamiliar with her work, she’s the real deal. In an industry filled with manufactured, auto-tuned singers that seem to have been created specifically for adverts that sell expensive cars, Weyes Blood mines Pop music’s rich history and harkens back to the days when Carole King and Carly Simon ruled the charts. While not sounding like either of those Pop icons, Weyes Blood shares the same musical universe with her honest, pure voice and melodic songwriting skills. The singles “It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody,” “Grapevine,” and “God Turned Me Into A Flower” have already grabbed the attention of listeners who have been eagerly anticipating this album since the release of TITANIC RISING three years ago. And by the sound of AND IN THE DARKNESS, HEARTS AGLOW, it was well worth the wait.
