Symphonic Metal band Beyond the Black was formed in Mannheim, Germany in 2014. Fronted by vocalist Jennifer Haben, the group originally featured guitarists Nil Lesser and Christopher Hummels, keyboardist Michael Hauser, bassist Erwin Schmidt, and drummer Tobias Derer. They made their first significant live appearance at the Wacken Open Air festival in 2014 before releasing their debut album, SONGS OF LOVE AND DEATH, in early 2015. The album was a success and Beyond the Black toured in support of the album, even appearing on morning TV to promote it. The group’s second album, LOST IN FOREVER, was released a year later and continued the band’s climb to prominence. However, less than six months after the release of the album, Jennifer parted ways with the other band members and set out in search of new members to help move her musical vision forward…
By the release of Beyond the Black’s third album, HEART OF THE HURRICANE, in 2018, Jennifer had been joined by guitarists Tobi Lodes and Chris Hermsdörfer, bassist Stefan Herkenhoff (who would leave in 2021), drummer Kai Tschierschky, and keyboardist Jonas Roßner (who left just prior to the release of the album). The group then toured with Dutch Symphonic Metal band Within Temptation and others before going out on a headline tour of their own. In 2020, they released their fourth album, HØRIZØNS, which was their most successful album to date, climbing to #3 on the German Albums chart. After touring to support the album – including a co-headline tour with Swedish / Danish Metal band Amaranthe – Jennifer and the rest of Beyond the Black went back into the studio to create their fifth album.
In 2023, the group returns with the highly anticipated album BEYOND THE BLACK. Down to a quartet after the departure of bassist Stefan Herkenhoff, the group still sounds as powerful as ever on this album filled with crunchy guitar riffs, soaring melodies, and Jennifer’s powerful vocals. And while the album is filled with power, the band still finds time to blend acoustic guitars, haunting melodies, the occasional growling vocal, and twisted time signatures into their sound. From anthemic, fist-pumping moments to beautifully enchanting musical passages, BEYOND THE BLACK is a heavy album that will appeal to fans of Metal icons like Dio, Hard Rock legends like Heart, and even modern Prog acts like Marillion. Highlights of the album include “Reincarnation,” “Is There Anybody Out There?” and “Dancing in the Dark.” BEYOND THE BLACK proves that you can definitely mix Metal with melody without losing any power.
