It has been 12 years since iconic Gothic Metal band Type O Negative split up following the death of bassist and lead vocalist Peter Steele in 2010. Since then, their influence can still be felt on Doom and Gothic Metal albums released since the band’s breakup. However, Type O Negative first made an impact on the music business with the release of their debut album – SLOW, DEEP, AND HARD – in 1991. Founded in 1989 by former Carnivore member Steele, the group also included Steele’s childhood friends Kenny Hickey (guitar), Josh Silver (keyboards), and drummer Sal Abruscato (replaced by Johnny Kelly in 1993). Since Steele was already under contract to Roadrunner Records, the label had first shot at the album and released it in ’91. The album was not a huge commercial success, but it did a great job in introducing Type O Negative to the world.

In 1992, the group released their second album, THE ORIGIN OF THE FECES, which gained notoriety because of the title alone. The following year, Type O Negative made their commercial breakthrough with the album BLOODY KISSES, which charted in several countries including the US. In 1996, the group’s popularity was solidified when OCTOBER RUST charted in the Top 10 in Austria, Finland, Germany, and Sweden while hitting the Top 40 in Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, and the UK. They achieved similar success with 1999’s WORLD COMING DOWN, 2003’s LIFE IS KILLING ME, and 2007’s DEAD AGAIN. Type O Negative’s career was on a roll with hit albums, headline tours, and a growing fanbase. However, it all came to an end with the death of bandleader Peter Steele on April 14, 2010, at the age of 48. Instead of replacing him, the remaining band members chose not to continue, and Type O Negative was no more.

And now, 15 years after the release of their final full-length, DEAD AGAIN, the album receives a deluxe expanded 15th Anniversary reissue. The digitally remastered release includes the original album plus an additional 10 live tracks spread over two CDs (the triple vinyl LP features 16 tracks and the cassette features the original album’s 10 tracks). Including the singles “The Profit of Doom” and “September Sun,” DEAD AGAIN was the band’s highest charting album in the US, rising to #27 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. The additional live tracks include recordings from their Wacken Open Air festival appearance in 2007 plus additional live tracks. Overall, the package reveals the band’s ultimate power in the studio and on the stage and is proof that we’ll never see the likes of Type O Negative again. So, time to bask in their glory and be reminded why they remain an influential force in Metal music.
